Welcome to Conversation Nation, the official home of conversation. Ok, truth be told, conversation doesn’t technically have an official home. But our legal department is looking into it. Until then, this is where David, Paula, Robi and Todd bring their thought bubbles to life and welcome you in to discuss whatever’s on your mind.

Should They Take The Raise?

Posted by Robi

Massachusetts, like the country, is in the midst of an economic crisis. The Governor is talking about cutting millions out of the budget. Tough choices have to be made

State lawmakers have a choice to make. Should they accept a pay raise?

Massachusetts taxpayers may complain about legislators getting a raise but perhaps they shouldn't, after all, they approved it

An amendment to the state constitution, approved by voters in 1998, calls for automatic pay raises for lawmakers every two years. The Governor's office estimates that raise should be 5.5 %

But legislators don't have to take the money, they could individually refuse it or donate the money to charity.

They may be entitled to the money by statute, but symbolically is this the right time to take it?

We asked some voters what they think

How do you feel about it?
