If you ask a shop owner in West Concord "penny for your thoughts?" they may respond by saying "how about a nickel?"
In a town that knows a thing or two about revolution, some merchants are banding together to launch a battle of their own. They want to do away with accepting the penny
One store owner says the penny is a nuisance. She believes they are wasteful and when people dig into their pockets for pennies, it slows down business. So this Thursday, the anniversary of Abe Lincoln's birthday, several merchants in West Concord say they will no longer accept pennies as payment. They plan to round down purchase to the nearest nickel instead
These business owners hope to convince President Obama to sign an executive order that allows merchants to refuse accepting the penny under these circumstances. But they may face an uphill battle as the U.S mint plans to roll out four new designs for pennies this year!
Nickel for your thoughts on this idea?
