They had been dubbed "Hack Holidays" Two days off on Mondays where all schools, city and state offices close in Suffolk County. They've been around for decades but because of the recession and the fact that it costs the state around $5 million to shut down for those days, there was renewed debate over whether to do away with them. The Senate voted to keep the holidays. Last night House members did the same
After the vote several pols lashed out at the news media for whipping up public sentiment against the holidays
One said "I hope these holidays are around and with us a long time after the Globe is gone."
Another said he's "tired of the people in this chamber coming in and bowing to the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe."
The Patriot Ledger printed this editorial after the Senate voted to keep the days. They were highly critical of Senator Jack Hart.
A Kingston rep who was in favor of eliminating the days said doing so might help disperse some of the black cloud hanging over Beacon Hill after recent ethics scandals. He told the Herald "make the decision the people of the Commonwealth expect us to make."
Did we whip you people into a frenzy on this or were you already there? Do you wish they would have done away with the "hack" holidays?
