Now you might think it's a bit crazy to get this all important test on
New Year's Eve..the news might not be good..what a way to start 2010
off, right? Well thankfully, once again I am blessed that my mammogram was fine!
I share this with you in hopes of, if you are a woman, to remind you to
get yours and, if you are a guy, to remind the important gal in your
life to schedule their mammogram! I went to Radiological Associates of
Sacramento (RAS) where I've gone every year since turning 40..I also
got one when I was 35 for a story. I'm 43 now and actually missed a
year because I was pregnant..but now 6 months post partum I needed to
go! RAS has always been very accomodating...always a good experience
and this time was no different. In fact, the technologist Pam was so
informative I think it was the most thorough explanation of this
screening I have ever heard. It was great. Of course, having the doc
look at it immediately afterwards and then tell me the good...well
great news was a wonderful way to start the New Year! He was terrific
too. I then happily drove to Honeybaked Ham to pick up our New Year's
Eve feast. Again, I share this with you because I have had the honor
of talking to so many cancer survivors in my 13+ years as health
reporter here in Sac. These men and women are tremendous inspirations
to me because they shared their story in hopes of helping
others...EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES! My dear colleague Tina Macuha
also, of course, proved that point and by telling her story is probably
responsible for saving hundreds of lives! Start the New Year off
right...get important health screenings you have been putting off...men
and women! It is scary to wait for the results but knowing can make
all the difference. www.bookmymammogram.com
is site RAS has...very good to check out and an easy way to schedule the
test! Dr. Norton, one of my favorite docs, writes an informative blog too! Here's to taking charge of your health and taking charge of your
life in 2010! Dec 29, 2009 3:50 PM Posted by dpenna Hello! Hope you all had a beautiful Christmas! Wow! I can't believe it is going to be 2010 already! Just checking in to remind you about our Good Day to Give campaign for local families in need. We are still looking for donations of food and clothing at our partner locations: Any Wells Faro/Wachovia, Papa Murphy Pizza, The Fountains at Roseville and Sac Midtown buisnesses! I have met some of the families who have benefitted from area food banks , the places getting these donations and it's truly amazing how Mom and Dad ...sometimes Aunt/Uncle and/or Grandma/Grandpa facing tough economic times make it week to week, month to month. You know, now that I have children I truly appreciate their sweet innocence and while families do their best to provide for these beautiful little kids, in many cases the children don't know the hardship the adults are facing. They are just adorable little kids , loved by their parents!
Our viewers have helped these families with food and clothing. The campaign ends December 31st but of course you can always help out your local food bank. Our charity is Feeding America and that basically is an umbrella organization connecting all food banks locally. I would be remiss if I didn't mention our sponsors: we had a ball at the Wells Fargo and Wachovia branches we went live from recently on Good Day Sacramento and CBS 13 News shows! We also featured their Adopt-a-School program where bank employees pick the schools they want to donate to! They raised more than $170,000 for schools throughout our region! Papa Murphy's was so much fun too! Met a bunch of great employees and owners once again at these live shots! A Papa Murphy product also prompted me to start a family tradition...since I am not too domestic...hahaha their cookie dough fits the bill for yummy cookies and a fun time with my soon-to-be 3 year old! Proving that "not too domestic" part, I didn't spread out the cookie dough enough so when it actually got done cooking , it looked more like "cookie pie!" Hahaha my little one didn't mind because in our tummy it was all gooood! Papa Murphys is so generous, if you bring a donation to any of their lcoations, you get your choice of cookie dough, cheesy bread or cinnamon wheel (YUM YUM YUM) for free!!! The Fountains at Roseville also has bins and Cody was out there having a ball with shop employees who tossed a bunch of change in their fountains...all that change went to the local charity in Roseville region! And last but certainly not least, the Sacramento Midtown Business Association. We were live a bunch of times at their new ice rink! How awesome! The Good Day staff had loads of fun with Santa, on the ice and at their Toy Shop! The Sacramento Midtown Business Association also did a toy drive for the Sheriff's department. If you donated...thank you so muhc on behalf of those in need!
I hope 2010 is wonderful for you and your loved ones! Thanks for checking my blog...I will do my best to update it more...one of my top work resolutions!!!
Nov 20, 2009 5:20 PM Posted by Moderator Gavin If you remember back in June, we did a Dream Giveaway to help Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. During one of the Good Day Sacramento live shots, I was honored to meet a wonderful little boy named Gavin from Sacramento (pictured). He is 2 ½ years old and at the age of seven months, underwent a life saving stem cell transplant. Due to the condition he is blind, but his life was saved as a result of St. Jude’s. His wonderful family is now trying to help Saint Jude’s continue their great work! On Sunday, November 22 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., if you go to the Chili’s Grill & Bar restaurant at 5303 Sunrise Boulevard in Fair Oaks and dine in or take out and say you're there for Gavin's foundation, they will donate 10% of what you pay for your meal to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Gavin’s honor! The restaurant’s phone number is 916-962-0404! If you would like to make a donation, or would like to sponsor Gavin, visit www.mystjudeheroes.org/herogavin. Nov 3, 2009 12:31 PM Posted by Moderator Oh I received more pictures from the Geweke Pink October in Yuba City…look at these beautiful women…all breast cancer survivors! Oh and I wanted to mention that Wendy Rickertsen of Mary Kay did all of the models make up. Mine too and man I needed it after a long day at work…hahahaha! Wendy was really wonderful and Mary Kay is a great product…not just sayin’ that because she helped me! I bought a lip liner and Wendy did this thing with the eye liner to make sure color went just at base of lashes…so I learned a lot too…wish she could do my make up every day! Wendy can be reached at www.marykay.com/wrickertsen. She was a terrific gal to work with and is really into the make up artistry stuff!
Oct 28, 2009 11:18 PM Posted by Moderator Well as I told you, I emceed the second Geweke Fashion Show in Yuba City with all the models of course, breast cancer survivors. I did tear up this time while reading their bios. These ladies , like the ones at the Lodi Fashion Show, are so inspiring and wonderful, words can't describe. The pictures say it all. Thanks to John Hollis/digital photography! One constant message from many of them....EARLY DETECTION SAVED THEIR LIFE. Please schedule your mammogram, do your breast self exams and take charge of your health! Oh and once again firefighters from Sutter County and Yuba City served as escorts! Great night! See you next time! Oct 27, 2009 12:36 PM Posted by Moderator The Sacramento SPCA held its annual Reigning Cats and Dogs Gala Saturday. I truly think it was the most successful one yet...so many people. This year I not only emceed with KFBK's Kitty Oneal but our own Dave Bender. He also did the live auction part...he's really good! Kitty is such a terrific gal too! She looked great in 60's outfit...the theme for the evening! Next year the venue is actually changing to a formal setting :Arden Hills Country club! Check out www.sspca.org for details about the Sac SPCA. (Thanks Howard Gold of PawPrint Productions for the pic of me and David...Howard looked great too in his sixties suit-hysterical! The other group pic if ya haven't figured it out is of me, Dave, Kitty and Rick Johnson as a 60's guy!) Also, from Christa Trinchera, Marketing and Special Events gal extraordinaire, a wonderful event to tell you about for a very important cause. Christa tells me The Elk Grove Police Department K9 Unit/Association will host their first Annual Holiday Fundraiser,a Food and Wine Event for People and Dogs on November 20th at 6:30 p.m. It will be at the Franklin Ranch Pet Hospital and Hotel (10207 Frnaklin Boulevard in Elk Grove). Pics are of me and special ladies Rene and Jaime who volunteer for the awesome events; me and survivors relaxing before the show; me up on cool stage and me with some handsome Lodi Firefighters who served as escorts for our beautiful models! Well sorry for the “me, me, me” usually not my style but they are the only pics sent to me by Jen Howell, the terrific gal who took the pictures. She does great work. Check out her website at www.newvintagephotographybyjen.com. She sent even more of me …hahaha but I didn’t want to bore ya too much and hello……still need to lose the belly! Yeah good luck! I have a 2 and ½ month old boy and 4 month old girl…I know…no excuses but dang finding time to exercise very tough. I am eating healthier but it’s the portions that get me! Oh and DJ , Dennis Bloom of Spinning Tunes did a fabulous job. Ya need upbeat music for a fashion show and he supplied it! I didn’t cry this year…..when I read the models description of outfit there is also a bio of how the model beat breast cancer and their outlook on life, etc. So inspiring let me tell you and despite my crazy hormones (after having a baby 4 months ago…it is my constant excuse hahaha) Oct 22, 2009 11:26 AM Posted by Moderator Well as usual I’m a day late and dollar short with my blog! What a moving, emotional day as families of survivors, survivors and loads of friends came out for a terrific morning!
