Grads Want A Bailout

Posted by jcase
When did we get into a "bail out" mentality? College students can't afford their loans: why is this my problem? I went to a college I could afford, took loans as needed, and paid them off. Don't buy it if you can't afford it: how's that for a concept? Perhaps the government should stop bailing people and companies out and start creating jobs so that people can afford to pay their own way through life.

Stephanie, Whitman
AP
Good idea. The trouble is that college tuition is getting less and less affordable. Even at cheaper state colleges. Some argue the student loans themselves are causing this, which seems like circular logic. And of course, there are other theories...

The fact remains though that recent grads' inability to pay back their loans will have consequences for all of us and may put a drag on the entire economy. Take a look at Kate Merrill's story from last night...

What do you think should be done about all that student debt? Do you think they should be bailed out? Or should they be left to fend for themselves?

Blowing In The Wind

Posted by Jonathan_Elias

It has been a battle every step of the way.  Cape Wind has been trying for eight years to install 130 wind turbines off the Cape in the Horseshoe Shoal and Nantucket Sound area to produce three quarters of the enough energy for cape and islands.  Some on the cape are not in favor and have fought against it.

Over the years many hurdles have been dealt with, and just when things were looking good for this project to get started another hurdle.  This time Massachusetts Historical Commission executive director Brona Simon sent a letter to the U.S. Minerals Management Service   He wants the area to be a listed as a historic site given its ties to the Wampanoag.

Those wanting this clean energy and in favor of the wind farm are beyond frustrated at this point.  Why wasn’t this issue brought up two, three, even six years ago?  Those who don’t want the turbines to go up at all might be celebrating yet another delay.

What do you think?  Is this power and influence buying delay after delay?  Or should turbines be going up in the ocean off the shore of the cape at all?

Share your thoughts and we’ll talk about it today on WBZ News at 5pm.

Making it in Massachusetts? Not Anymore.

Posted by David_Wade

Here are three words that will drive you crazy:   "Made In China."

Here are three more:  "Waste Of Money."

This a story that encapsulates both phrases with annoying aplomb.

About a year ago,  the state gave Evergreen Solar, out of Marlboro, about $60 million dollars in aid to built a factory.  We did a big story on the company's innovative ideas.   Its solar panel building factory in Devens would lead the "green revolution"  and create jobs.

Well, well, well.  Evergreen Solar is now shifting its assembly of those panels to..... yes.... China.

According to the Globe, Evergreen pledged, when it got its $58.6 million from the state,  that it would create about 350 jobs.   The number has actually been much higher.

But what happens now?  Evergreen won't say how many of its 700 or so jobs in Massachusetts will dissapear faster than you can say "Made in China."

It's a sad, sad development.

But who do you blame?  Do you blame the Governor for giving Evergreen a sweetheart deal?  Or... did the company pull a fast one?  And perhaps the bigger question:  how do we stop these companies from bailing on us??

As a taxpayer, I have three more words:  I feel duped.

Are Women Cut Out For Combat?

Posted by Steve_Bognar_EP
Michelle Wilmot

Men fight wars and men win wars -- that's the way it's been since the beginning of time.

Today, combat is no longer a "Men's Only" club.

Women are seeing action on the front lines -- despite U.S. policy that bars them from ground combat.

A recent CBS News/New York Times Poll shows the majority of Americans support a greater role for women on the battlefield.

Michelle Wilmot is from Gardner and is part of a military unit known as "Team Lioness." She's being recognized as "Outstanding Woman Veteran of the Year" -- check out Karen Anderson's profile of Wilmot.

The group searches Afghan and Iraqi women and children for weapons -- men are not allowed to do the searches for culture reasons.

But just like men, they patrol streets -- serve as gunners -- dispose of explosives and find bullets whizzing past their heads every day.

Is it time for a change in military policy?

What role should women play on the battlefield?

Mickey Mouse Goes Mean?

Posted by Jonathan_Elias

What is going on at Disney? Cute, lovable Mickey and Donald, who have thrilled kids for years, are now getting a scary makeover. Mickey is going maniacal, and the new Donald is going to scare the hell out of young kids. What are they thinking? (images by Disney)

The folks at Disney swinging the pens want to reinvent the image of their long time staples for a video game. Characters with an edge? Is this a smart idea?

What are your thoughts? We’ll talk about it today (not for too long) at 5pm on WBZ News.

And We Are Paying For This?

Posted by Jonathan_Elias

Your train is late, last month it was late, and three months ago it was involved in a wreck.  Sounds like a bad movie, but this is the reality of mass transit in and around Boston.  The MBTA operating budget is 1.1 billion dollars, but really what are we getting for our money. Efficiency, safety, a clean safe environment to get from point ‘a’ to point ‘b’?  The ‘T’ cries poverty, and now we find they may be neglecting safety issues which could endanger passengers.

What is wrong with the ‘T’?  What would you like to see happen to this agency? Should the agency be gutted and start over? Should it get a big taxpayer bailout to fix the issues? Where should the money come from?

Tell us your thoughts and we’ll talk about it today at 5pm on WBZ News.

Hello. This Is Mr. Roboto, Please Vote.

Posted by David_Wade
How many other voters are annoyed by the automated phone calls asking for your vote? Would someone please vote to outlaw this annoyance!! You won't believe this, but the phone's ringing ...and it's Senator Kerry.

Suzanne, West Roxbury

The last time a  robot gave me life changing advice was in the 1970's.  It was this commercial that constantly ran on Channel 56.  Yes, C3PO told me, and R2D2 "not to smoke cigarettes."

Well, today, Election Day, the robots are back!

However, the advice they're offering goes something like this:  "Hello, I'm (insert famous name here) and I'm calling you this Election Day to ask you to vote for (insert desperate candidate's name here).  He/She is unlike any other politican and will bring world peace. Thank You."

The RoboCalls are annoying!  If you are like me, you signed up for the "Do Not Call List" because you did NOT want to be annoyed.  Unfortunately, political robocalls are exempt from the federal "Do Not Call" lists.

Isn't that convenient?  The politicians who make the rules protect their own annoying sales pitches!

So here are my questions for you:  Have you ever voted for someone because of one of these calls?   Do you think political calls should be exempt from the Do Not Call?  Did C3PO keep you from cigarettes as well?

Let us know what you think.  We will share some of your comments on TV at 5pm.

Okay, got to go.  The phone is ringing and I'm hoping it's a robot who just wants to talk.  Not politics.  Just talk.

Leaf Blowers Beware

Posted by Jonathan_Elias

They are fast, convenient, and in Brookline they could be illegal.  If you use a leaf blower it better be under 67 decibels otherwise that will be considered an illegal machine.  This new ordinance goes into effect at the beginning of the year in Brookline.  There will be an inspection station to make sure your machine isn’t too loud.

Not just the level of noise, but also when you can use it.  No earlier than 8am and no later than 8pm. On weekends - no earlier than 9am.

Nice to have regulations regarding these noisy machines, or is this a ridiculous waste of money and time? Any other neighborly advice you think people should follow? What annoys you about your neighbors?

Share your thoughts and we’ll talk about it today at 5pm on WBZ News.

Catching Red Light Runners

Posted by Jonathan_Elias

You see it all the time.  Some driver racing the light and blowing through a red.  Narrowly missing other driver’s even pedestrians getting ready to cross.   If the Governor gets his way we could soon see red light cameras.  Blow a light and you see a flash.  That’s your picture getting taken and within a few weeks a hefty fine shows up in the mail.

Other states have been using this to make intersections safer and at the same time boost revenue.  You like this idea?  Is it big brother, or a way of keeping us safer?

I’m curious what your thoughts are?  We’ll share some of your ideas when we talk about it today on WBZ News.
