Here comes the time of year that people either love or hate: it's time for the Minnesota State Fair! For those who are not frequent fair-goers, hearing the phrase "The Great Minnesota Get-Together" repeatedly can grate on one's nerves. In addition, it seems that just about every news media broadcasts from the fair (by the way, I'll be blogging and
twittering at the WCCO booth), so even if you are simply listening to the radio, it is tough to escape the frequent marketing of the fair.
The biggest hype award goes to the food, of course. Looking at the new foods offered for this year it seems the "on a stick" variety still remains popular (French fry covered deep fried hot dog on a stick anyone?) as does anything stuffed and fried (deep fried Norwegian banana split).
Although the food draws me in, my favorite activity at the fair is people watching. I love to sit back with a basket of cheese curds and watch fashion challenged fairgoers devour everything on a stick.
When starting to plan my food attack, I went through every item on the
State Fair Food Finder writing down anything I might be interested in eating. I ended up with over 30 items! Considering I'm not looking to gain fifteen pounds in a twelve day period, I figured it would be best to narrow the list down to ten or so items. I've listed them below and I would love to hear your opinion. Is there something you recommend that isn't on my list? Is there something on my list I should skip? What is your food attack plan? Share it in the comments. I can't wait to hear what you have to say.
State Fair Food Attack: Cheese Curds: Regular and jalapeno variety (if they are offered)
Arctic Island Slushies: DIY mix and match flavors? Awesome!
Cream Puffs: Love cream puffs, but never had them at the fair.
Harry Singh's Trinidadian Doubles: Two pieces of bara bread filled with curried chickpeas, hot sauce and chutney.
Vescio's Fried Ravioli: Mmmm….delicious!
Spam Breakfast Sandwiches: Can't help it. I must try these.
Peg Muffins: Fried egg, sausage, cheese and tomato. Is it simply a breakfast sandwich? Not sure.
Caprese Salad on a Stick: Taking a step back from the unhealthy fried foods for a second.
Veggie Pie: What's a veggie pie? I'm about to find out.
Veggie Fries: Fried vegetables? Must try!
I will also be attending the
Minnesota Cooks event on September 1st in Carousel Park to watch the chef demonstrations. I'm very excited for the Spoonriver and Trotter's Café demos because what can beat creamy risotto and delicious roasted veggie pizza?
