Nov 14, 2009 12:46 AM Posted by JasonParker What is it about going 7-3 in a week that I can’t stop? I want to go undefeated, or at the very least just have one loss in a week. But yet again, Campus Crunch produced another seven win week last go-around. That will not do anymore!!! On to this week’s picks!!!
Last Week’s Result: 7-3
Season Total: 64-36 (.640)
Auburn vs. Georgia: The South’s oldest rivalry adds another chapter this weekend, and this game could mean nothing less this year. No conference titles to be won, no fighting for position in the national championship picture…just good old southeastern football. And I have no problem with that. Preseason Pick: Georgia This Weeks Pick: Auburn
Georgia Tech vs. Duke: This one is for all the marbles in the ACC’s Coastal division. Let me repeat: DUKE IS COMPETEING FOR THE ACC COASTAL DIVISON TITLE. Just think about that for a moment. As much as some would like to see the Blue Devils go to the conference championship game, in part to attack the ACC, the Yellow Jackets are just too tough. Start packing for Tampa, Wreck fans. Preseason Pick: Georgia Tech This Weeks Pick: Georgia Tech
Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh: The Irish hobble into this game after losing for the second straight time at home to Navy (insert joke here). Pittsburgh has something to fight for in the Big East, but in this matchup, I see Jimmy Clausen and the Golden Domers taking out their frustration on the unsuspecting Panthers. Preseason Pick: Notre Dame This Weeks Pick: Notre Dame
Utah vs. TCU: One of the two games on the day to feature two ranked teams. The Horned Frogs have everything to play for in this one. The outside chance of playing in the BCS Championship game is sitting there for them to grab. A loss to the Utes and it’s off to some second-tier bowl game in Shreveport or Boise. Fight on, Frogs! Preseason Pick: TCU This Weeks Pick: TCU
USC vs. Stanford: I don’t care what people might say, but this was the biggest upset in college football history when the Cardinal went to Southern Cal and pulled off the one point victory. That was a BAD Stanford team…this year is a GOOD team. Imagine the possibilities. USC is ripe for the picking in this one, coming off some bad losses in conference. Preseason Pick: USC This Weeks Pick: USC
FIU vs. North Texas: It’s getting sad over on 8th Street. This team was not supposed to be this bad. This season was not supposed to be over this quickly. It will only get worse this week. Preseason Pick: FIU This Weeks Pick: North Texas
Florida State vs. Wake Forest: The momentum that the Seminoles had started to built was quickly shot down in one 15-minute period last Saturday. Gone are the hopes of an ACC title…and worse yet, gone is starting quarterback. Now it’s just about getting back to being bowl eligible. Shouldn’t be a problem with Wake and Maryland as the next two games, but who knows what team from Tallahassee will show up this week. Preseason Pick: Florida State This Weeks Pick: Florida State
Florida vs. South Carolina: The storyline of the Gators taking on their former coach has lost its luster since Steve Spurrier’s boys have not been anywhere near competitive in the last two meetings. Florida’s offense will still continue to struggle, something that needs to be fixed quickly before a certain game in December. That being said, their defense will do more than enough to keep them in the driver’s seat. Preseason Pick: Florida This Weeks Pick: Florida
Miami vs. North Carolina: The ‘Canes once again meet their nemesis. No, not Tar Heels coach Butch Davis, but playing in Chapel Hill, a place they have never won. Miami is riding off the high of blowing out Virginia and staying in the picture for a berth in the ACC Championship game. On paper, they are the better team in this battle. What won’t help them is if they start scoreboard watching, as the game between Georgia Tech and Duke is played before the ‘Canes take the field. If they have been knocked out before they even take the field, than North Carolina get an opening to pounce and pull off the upset. Preseason Pick: North Carolina This Weeks Pick: North Carolina
Iowa vs. Ohio State: Just when the Buckeyes thought they were out of the race for the Big Ten championship and a trip the Rose Bowl, in comes those always tough Northwestern Wildcats, who went into Iowa City last week and ruined the Hawkeyes season by pulling off the big upset. Now, Iowa limps into Columbus, without their superstar quarterback, and really without a shot. It was a nice run, Hawkeyes…had to end sometime…don’t feel bad, I know plenty of teams that would love to be in the spot you are. Preseason Pick: Ohio State This Weeks Pick: Ohio State Nov 7, 2009 12:04 AM Posted by JasonParker College football hits its home stretch this month, and we’ve learned a few things. First, apparently the Florida Gators players are better at handing out discipline for their actions then head coach Urban Meyer. Also, Nike can truly sell its schools on anything, evident by the God-awful look of the FSU jerseys for their game later this month against Maryland. Finally, this is a three team race for a trip to the National Title Game…but could that change this week?
Last Week’s Result: 6-4
Season Total: 57-33 (.633)
Wake Forest vs. Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets are on the fast track for a 2nd trip to the ACC Championship game. You would think that a one-dimensional team wouldn’t have as much success as they have, but at this point you can argue an outside chance at the national title game as well as a trip to Tampa. Preseason Pick: Georgia Tech This Weeks Pick: Georgia Tech
UConn vs. Cincinnati: The Bearcats have heard from all over that they do not belong in the talk for a trip to Pasadena and the BCS Championship Game. True, they do play in the Big East, but undefeated is still undefeated. Against a depleted and still emotional Huskies team, Cincy should stay undefeated. Preseason Pick: Cincinnati This Weeks Pick: Cincinnati
Oklahoma vs. Nebraska: Sad that these two rivals don’t play each other every year like they used to. This was a rivalry that ranked as one of the best in college football history. This year, both teams sit with questions of “What If…” for their season so far. Boomer Sooner rides on. Preseason Pick: Oklahoma This Weeks Pick: Oklahoma
UCF vs. Texas: Last time these two played, the Longhorns squeaked by UCF in Orlando. This week, in Austin…not so close. Preseason Pick: Texas This Weeks Pick: Texas
FIU vs. Middle Tennessee State: I wanted to be on the Panthers bandwagon this season. I tried this far. I can’t do it anymore…it’s hurting my average. Preseason Pick: FIU This Weeks Pick: Middle Tennessee State
Florida vs. Vanderbilt: Without Brandon Spikes, what will the Gators defense do? Win by only 40. There is just too much talent as the Orange and Blue continue their march toward a meeting with Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Preseason Pick: Florida This Weeks Pick: Florida
Florida State vs. Clemson: The ‘Noles have finally made it back to .500 for the season, and somehow are still in the race for the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Clemson, meanwhile, is trying to finally live up to expectations and get to the Championship game for the first time. Virtually equal in talent, Florida State seems to be playing with more heart. Preseason Pick: Clemson This Weeks Pick: Florida State
Miami vs. Virginia: The ‘Canes welcome the Cavaliers to homecoming, but this means more to Miami then just the average conference game. Miami and their fans remember the embarrassment UVA gave them in their final game ever at the old Orange Bowl back in 2007. Add that to the difference in talent between the two squads, and this one could get ugly real quick. Preseason Pick: Miami This Weeks Pick: Miami
Ohio State vs. Penn State: What was originally thought to be a national semifinal when the season started as turned into a battle for second place in the Big Ten, hoping Iowa falters at some point. Terrell Pryor has been catching plenty of flack for his play, which has not been all that bad. Penn State has a defense that can play with anyone in the country. A loud, raucous crowd is something both teams are used to, so give Penn State the advantage at home. Preseason Pick: Penn State This Weeks Pick: Penn State
LSU vs. Alabama: Probably the best game of the day, as these two teams fight for the SEC West Crown, and for oh so much more. For the Tigers, it’s all about getting back in the hunt for the SEC championship game. While the Crimson Tide still have their sights set on getting to the National Championship game the eluded them in 2008. LSU kept the high powered Florida offense to only 13 points, which gives them hope against ‘Bama. Problem is, they only scored 3 points in that game, and the Tide’s defense is slightly better than the Gators. Preseason Pick: Alabama This Weeks Pick: Alabama Oct 31, 2009 1:07 AM Posted by JasonParker Halloween…candy flowing, pumpkins carved, skirts getting shorter and called “costumes”. But enough about what goes on at the Parker house. College football hopes for a night of tricks and treats this season, as do we here at Campus Crunch.
Last Week’s Picks: 7-3
Season Total: 51-29 (.637)
Ole Miss vs. Auburn: From fighting for a spot in the National Championship picture to a spot in the upper rankings of the SEC West, this has not been the way Houston Nutt thought the season would be for the Rebels. Another tough battle looms for them against the Tigers. Preseason Pick: Ole Miss This Weeks Pick: Ole Miss
FAMU vs. Howard: This game is important for both schools, as they look to stay in the hunt for the MEAC title. FAMU started hot, has fizzled as of late, but should have enough fire power to take care of the Bisons. Preseason Pick: n/a This Weeks Pick: FAMU
Marshall vs. UCF: As bad as the Knights were supposed to be at the start of the season, things have been better than expected. Now, that doesn’t mean they will be fighting for the Conference USA crown this year, but a win over the Thundering Herd does make a bowl game look more of a possibility. Preseason Pick: UCF This Weeks Pick: UCF
FAU vs. Middle Tennessee State: Another action packed battle from the Sun Belt Conference. The Owls are riding a two game winning streak into this one. Out of sheer hometown bias, let’s make it three. Preseason Pick: FAU This Weeks Pick: FAU
FIU vs. Louisiana-Lafayette: My pick of the Golden Panthers going to a bowl game is looking dimmer and dimmer with every game. Come on, guys…make me right! Preseason Pick: FIU This Weeks Pick: Louisiana-Lafayette
Florida State vs. NC State: Homecoming weekend in the capital city is such a great time. While this season so far has been one to forget, a big win over North Carolina sets the tone for a turnaround for both the Seminoles, and their coach, Bobby Bowden. The ‘Noles and their alumni get back to .500 on the season. Preseason Pick: Florida State This Weeks Pick: Florida State
Florida vs. Georgia: It’s hard to believe that a team that is undefeated and ranked number one in the nation would be upset with their performance. But that is the situation for the Gators heading into “The World’s Largest Outdoor Party” in Jacksonville against the rival Bulldogs. If Georgia got thumped last year by 39 points to the Gators, with Strafford and Moreno, imagine how bad it’s going to be this year. Make it 18 of the last 21 games for Florida. Preseason Pick: Florida This Weeks Pick: Florida
Miami vs. Wake Forest: So was last week’s loss to Clemson a result of the Tigers being the better team, or the Hurricanes being so injured from their gauntlet of hell the first four weeks of the season. The Demon Deacons are not as good a team as they have been the past three seasons, but they still can be dangerous for a ‘Canes group depleted these past weeks. This game will be just like last week…a high scoring affair where whoever has the ball last comes out on top. Preseason Pick: Wake Forest This Weeks Pick: Miami
Texas vs. Oklahoma State: The Longhorns’ last real test of the regular season is going to be a good one. When the Cowboys are on, they can play with anyone in the country. They will be able to get to Colt McCoy and the Texas offense for the first half, but the firepower the men in burnt orange have is too much to contain for a full sixty minutes. Preseason Pick: Texas This Weeks Pick: Texas
USC vs. Oregon: This was the game at the beginning of the season I thought would be the Trojans’ annual letdown game. I still think the Ducks have a real shot in this one. They have the same issue that I just wrote about Oklahoma State…that they can be so inconsistent that I worry about picking them with any confidence. The Trojans come in after a bigger-then-the-score-looks win over Oregon State, as freshman quarterback Matt Barkley seems to be adjusting well to big time college football. Close battle, but the Trojans pull it out. Preseason Pick: Oregon This Weeks Pick: USC Oct 22, 2009 12:34 PM Posted by JasonParker
First off, I’d like to apologize for my
picks last week. Notre Dame, Missouri, and North Texas
were unacceptable picks, and I do send my most sincere apologies for anyone who
bet those. On the positive side, good
job by Florida State beating the bye week. Maybe they should join the ACC…oh wait, they
already have Duke (sorry, Prim)
Last Week:
6-4
Season
Total: 44-26 (.628)
UConn vs. West Virginia: The Huskies will be playing with heavy hearts,
after the death of teammate and Miami Edison graduate Jasper Howard. Yes, the Mountaineers are the better team on
the field, but the raw emotion UConn will be playing with makes me think there
is no way they lose this game. Preseason Pick: West Virginia This Weeks Pick: UConn
USC vs. Oregon State:
The Trojans are still angry about last year’s loss to the Beavers, now
known as “USC’s annual loss to a bad team” game. Matt Barkley is not looking like the freshman he
technically is, but that could all change in one game. Just not this one. Preseason
Pick: USC This Weeks Pick: USC
Virginia vs. Georgia Tech:
Why does this game matter? These
are the teams right now ahead of Miami
in the ACC’s Coastal division standings. The ‘Canes hold the tiebreaker over the
Jackets, so they need a Georgia Tech win. Ask and you shall receive. Preseason
Pick: Georgia Tech This Weeks Pick:
Georgia Tech.
Alabama vs. Tennessee:
Man, this used to be a decent ballgame and rivalry. Now, it’s just another game where Lane Kiffin
has to eat his words about another coach he has made controversial comments
about. Alabama might not call off the dogs in this
one. Preseason
Pick: Alabama This Weeks Pick: Alabama
TCU vs. BYU:
Who would have thought that the only game this week featuring two ranked
teams…would be in the Mountain West Conference? BYU has bounced back from an embarrassing loss
to Florida State, but the Horned Frogs (greatest nickname ever) know that a BCS
at large berth is theirs with this win. Preseason Pick: TCU This Weeks Pick: TCU
Florida Atlantic vs. Louisiana-Lafayette:
Mazel Tov to the Owls for their first win of the season last week over
Louisiana-Monroe. This week, not so
much. No state championship of Louisiana for FAU. Preseason
Pick: Louisiana-Lafayette This Weeks
Pick: Louisiana-Lafayette
FIU vs. Arkansas
State:
The Golden Panthers almost came back last week against Troy, which would have changed the look of
the Sun Belt Conference standings. Instead,
they sit at 1-5 and hopes of a bowl game are fading fast…real fast. Preseason
Pick: FIU This Weeks Pick: Arkansas State
Florida vs. Mississippi
State:
Remember Dan Mullen? He was the
man that gets much of the credit for Florida’s two national championships this
decade and pretty much being Tim Tebow’s right hand man (insert 5th
grade joke here). Now, he leads a
Bulldogs group into a battle with his former team. If anyone knows the Gators, it’s Mullen. It’ll be close, but talent wins out. Preseason
Pick: Florida
This Weeks Pick: Florida
Florida State vs. North Carolina:
The nightmare of the Seminoles first half of 2009 is now over. There is nothing they can do about being 2-4
and winless in the conference at this point of the season. Pride is what they have to play for. A winning record is still there for the
garnet and gold, but performances like the last two weeks will lead to nothing
but the first losing season since 1976. North Carolina has
underachieved in the conference, and a week off helps the ‘Noles. Preseason
Pick: Florida State This Weeks Pick: Florida State
Miami vs. Clemson: All who thought Miami would be 5-1 and ranked in the Top 10
at this point, please raise your hand…anyone…someone? This ‘Canes team has even surprised their
biggest supporters, but they seem to be for real. Now it’s back to conference play, against a
Clemson team that will be much better then the FAMU and UCF squads the ‘Canes
have taken on the last two weeks. Jacory
Harris and the U’s offense shouldn’t have a problem keeping them in the game
against an average Tigers defense. The
issue will be a injured ‘Canes defense having to face C.J Spiller, one of the
best running backs in college football. In
the words of one of our news producers, a proud alum of Miami and the biggest ‘Canes fan I know…”We
are going to lose another game or two this year.” I do agree, but not this week. Preseason
Pick: Miami
This Weeks Pick: Miami
Oct 17, 2009 1:13 AM Posted by JasonParker Ok, so we did a little better this past week. Big ups to Michigan, Georgia, and Florida State for keeping me from the elusive perfect week. Let’s go for it this week, shall we?
Last Week: 7-3
Season Total: 38-22
We’re going to do it a little differently this week…since all the good games are national, the state schools get to go first.
Miami vs. UCF: I think it’s highly possible that the ‘Canes got more of a challenge last week vs. Florida A&M then they will get this week against the Knights. Just another win for the comeback kids from Coral Gables. Preseason Pick: Miami This Week’s Pick: Miami
FIU vs. Troy: If you are going to be the best, you have to beat the best. And right now, Troy is the best team in the Sun Belt. A healthy T.Y. Hilton or not, I’m not sure if this team can beat the Trojans. Preseason Pick: Troy This Week’s Pick: Troy
Florida vs. Arkansas: Homecoming in Gainesville means one thing for Arkansas…no chance of winning. Tebow and the boys are on a fast track to the SEC Championship Game, and Bobby Petrino’s boys will be no match. Preseason Pick: Florida This Week’s Pick: Florida
Florida State vs. Bye Week: The ‘Noles, sitting at 2-4, enter the game as a slight favorite over the Bye Week. It’s going to be closer then the experts think, but Bowden and Company will be able to get these guys ready this week. Preseason Pick: N/A This Week's Pick: Florida State
Florida Atlantic vs. North Texas: The Owls need this win more than ever before. This team had the expectations of getting back to postseason play, but by this point would settle for a .500 season. Preseason Pick: Florida Atlantic This Week’s Pick: North Texas
Missouri vs. Oklahoma State: The loss of Dez Bryant, who at this point is still suspended for the game, is going to hurt big time for the Cowboys. Zac Robinson cannot single-handedly beat a Tigers team that is not as bad as their collapse against Nebraska would say. Preseason Pick: Oklahoma State This Week’s Pick: Missouri
Alabama vs. South Carolina: In a battle of the coach I grew up being taught to dislike (SoCar’s Steve Spurrier) versus the pure image of evil (Alabama’s Nick Satan…I mean Saban), you cannot go against the Tide. There is a pretty good chance they are the best team in the country at this moment. Preseason Pick: Alabama This Week’s Pick: Alabama
Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech: This is what I think will be the best game of the weekend. Virginia Tech’s always tough defense against the yard chewing machine known as the triple option from Georgia Tech. All this game is missing is the pouring rain and some cheesy NFL Films music. Preseason Pick: Virginia Tech This Week’s Pick: Virginia Tech
Texas vs. Oklahoma: The Red River Rivalry…where pigskins fly and corn dogs get consumed. Having Sam Bradford back gives the Sooners a pretty good chance of pulling off the upset, but a Texas team that is looking solid halfway into the season also has a good chance of stomping a mud hole in their friends from the north. Preseason Pick: Texas This Week’s Pick: Texas
USC vs. Notre Dame: At the start of the season, I would have told you that the Trojans would have run rough shot over Charlie’s boys in South Bend. At this point I’m not so sure. Yes, Pete Carroll has his team stacked and looks like they learned their lesson from an upset loss to Washington. But Weis also has the Irish playing good ball at this point. Sure, the wins are close. But along the same line as the Miami Hurricanes, those are games Notre Dame may have not won in years past from lack of maturity. High temperature in the low 40’s with 15+ MPH winds…I think the boys from So Cal are in trouble. As much as I would love to pick against our Executive Sports Producer and die-hard Notre Dame fan Leo Gomez, I can’t this week. Preseason Pick: USC This Week’s Pick: Notre Dame
Oct 10, 2009 12:45 AM Posted by JasonParker Here we are at Week Six of the college football season…the midway point for most schools on their schedules. It’s the halftime marker here at Campus Crunch, and to be honest with my readers, I have no clue how I am above .500 with these picks.
Last Week: 6-5
Season Total: 31-19
Georgia vs. Tennessee: Remember when this game was a big deal…when it not only meant something in the Southeastern Conference, but in the hunt for the national title? Now it’s just to avoid going to the Music City Bowl. Preseason Pick: Georgia This Week’s Pick: Georgia
Boston College vs. Virginia Tech: Since coming over to the ACC, and for a few Big East years before, the Eagles have owned Frank Beamer’s Hokies. Tyrod Taylor and the VaTech offense leave a lot to be desired, but that defense is as good as any in the nation. Preseason Pick: Virginia Tech This Week’s Pick: Virginia Tech
Colorado vs. Texas: My fellow sports producer, Joe Gross, is a proud graduate of University of Colorado. No, that is not a typo. While their nickname is CU, their actual initials are UC. Either way, it’s Division 1 football..It’s the Big 12. I don’t know where this is going, but Texas in a rout. Preseason Pick: Texas This Week’s Pick: Texas
Wisconsin vs. Ohio State: Somehow, the Badgers are not ranked, even though they are 5-0. How does this happen? Playing Wofford and Northern Illinois, for starters. It might be time for a wakeup call, compliments of Terrell Pryor and the Buckeyes. Preseason Pick: Ohio State This Week’s Pick: Ohio State
Michigan vs. Iowa: This game was sexier about a week ago before Michigan State decided to beat the Wolverines. This game will be one of two things for the Hawkeyes: Their welcome party into college football’s Top 10 this season…or the beginning of the end, as they still have games at Wisconsin, at Michigan State, and at Ohio State this season. Preseason Pick: Iowa This Week’s Pick: Michigan
Alabama vs. Ole Miss: At the beginning of this season, you could believe that this would be a matchup of #3 versus #20. Only problem is that a lot of fans and writers thought it would be the Rebels in the Top 5. Alabama looks for real, and as much as Ole Miss was a sexy pick at the start of the season, Nick Satan…I mean Saban should be in control. Preseason Pick: Ole Miss This Week’s Pick: Alabama
FIU vs. Western Kentucky: Dear Coach Cristobal…I need your help…I picked you guys to go bowling at the start of the season…Please don’t prove me wrong…Sincerely, Jason. FIU clearly has the better athletes. It’s all about the execution. Preseason Pick: FIU This Week’s Pick: FIU
Miami vs. FAMU: And now, the entire Hurricanes team can take that collective breath after getting through the gauntlet of games to start the year. No disrespect to the Rattlers, who are currently the best team in Tallahassee, but it’s not going to be a contest. Except with the bands, where the Marching 100 will destroy Miami’s “band”. Preseason Pick: Miami This Week’s Pick: Miami
Florida State vs. Georgia Tech: With all the history and greatness of the Seminoles program over the last thirty years, this is without a shadow of a doubt the most important game in their history. Win and you go into the bye week positive and a chance to salvage the season, and even contend for the ACC. Lose a third straight game…and it could get real ugly, real quick in the state capital. Preseason Pick: Florida State This Week’s Pick: Florida State
Florida vs. LSU: It doesn’t get much bigger than this one. #1 taking on #4 in Death Valley, one of the most insane places for a night game. You have got two defenses that are just sick and will knock each other all around. John Brantley is a talented quarterback, but the dynamic of that team changes with him in their instead of Tim Tebow, who still hasn’t been publicly cleared to play. On the other side of the ball, LSU has their own issues under center, but it’s more about Jordan Jefferson just not being all that good. Florida has lost the last two games in Baton Rouge, including a night game in 2007. I still feel Tebow will play, even though everyone in that stadium knows the Tigers will be gunning for him. Fans may not make plays, but they do make noise. And 90,000 will be rocking Tiger Stadium all night long. It still won’t be enough to stop the Gators. Preseason Pick: LSU This Week’s Pick: Florida
Oct 8, 2009 2:55 AM Posted by JasonParker
Through the first month of the college
football season, there are not many things that people would have expected when
things kicked off in early September. Players
punching players, Top 10 football teams dropping like flies week after week,
and a legend being asked to leave…by some of his school’s own alumni. Oy, what a month it has been.
- First off, have to start with the University of Miami and the gauntlet they ran through
in their first four games. There are not
many people, including those in the ‘Canes camp that thought they would come
out on the other side with a record of 3-1. Minus that one ugly incident in Blacksburg against
Virginia Tech, the U looked liked a team that wanted to be back in the college
football elite. There is still a long
season to go, but the major questions I feel have been addressed…Jacory Harris
has played cool under pressured in games against FSU and Oklahoma and not like a true sophomore. That, along with a defense that has been good
enough to keep the offense in the game, have kept the ‘Canes in the polls since
week one.
The only fear if I am a fan of the ‘Canes
is the dreaded word…complacency. Yes,
you got the hardest part of your schedule out of the way early, and came out looking
pretty nice on the other side. But as
much as some may laugh, you still have teams on your schedule that can, and
just might trip Miami
up. Clemson, Wake
Forest and North
Carolina are the teams that have the best chance to knock off the ‘Canes
on paper, and don’t sleep on a team like N.C. State.
Miami
has lost a main thing they had going for them the first four games: The got to play the roll of the team that was
supposed to lose and thus could play that underdog roll, which they did very
well. How they will play from this point
on as the favorite will determine if this team really is back.
I wouldn’t book tickets to the BCS
Championship game just yet, but I think Miami
is a sure lock for the ACC Championship game in early December.
- Meanwhile, up in Gainesville,
the world stood still when Tim Tebow could not stand…or even stay awake for
that matter, after getting knocked out versus Kentucky. For the record, whoever you root for, a hit
like that is not something you would want to wish on anyone. Will he play this week against LSU? If I am a betting man, which I have a bad
habit of being, I say that he will suit up and hit the field. Should he?
That’s where I’m not so sure.
Look at it this way…if you are the Gators, your real competition is Alabama, who you can’t
play until the SEC Championship game. You
won the national title last year as a one lost team, and a close loss on the
road to the #4 ranked team wouldn’t kill you. Tebow trying to be “Superman” and risking a
second concussion could be worse for your season, because you know those Tiger
defenders will be gunning for him. Plus,
it’s not like John Brantley is a bad option.
He brings a different type of quarterback, but you need to know how he
will handle the pressure when he becomes the starter next year.
And on a side note, I have to make a
comment on all the backlash at Urban Meyer for keeping Tebow in the game. Yes the score was in Florida’s
favor at the time, but it was the 3rd quarter of the game, and the
offense had not been playing up to Meyer’s standards in the game against Kentucky, or even the week before at Tennessee. Meyer was trying to get his team clicking when
this happen. If it had been the 1st
quarter, 1st play of the game, you would be hearing nothing about it
being “controversial”.
- Speaking of controversies, you would have to
be under a rock this week to hear the commotion coming from the state capital
this week. Florida State University
Board of Trustees Chairman Jim “I want to be the next president of the school”
Smith decided it was time for Head Coach Bobby Bowden to ride off into the
sunset. One problem with that: Smith has
no say in the decision what so ever. What
was a power trip by the former Attorney General of Florida (who, as one of the
leading Republicans in office, had many battles with the Democratic Speaker of
the Florida
House…retiring President T.K. Wetherell) turned into a melee that has
infighting within Seminole Nation at a fever pitch. There are those who think, after a 2-3 start
to the 2009 season, including two straight losses, that it is time for Bobby to
leave and let the Jimbo Fisher era begin.
While on the other side, there are the Bowden loyalists, blinded by the
first 25 years of Saint Bobby’s reign in Tallahassee,
willing to ignore the last 9 seasons that haven’t been up to “Seminole
standards”.
I grew up used to seeing the ‘Noles not
just win, but dominate. We knew every
year it was going to be at least a top four finish in the rankings and possibly
playing for the national championship. When
the ‘Noles lost two games in a season, it was a crisis. Fast forward to the 2001 season, when they
lost two games AT HOME, you would have thought it was the end. Now, it’s almost not surprising to those in
Garnet and Gold when they play sloppy against Jacksonville State
and lose to USF, a school that didn’t have football until 1997. This isn’t the same football team as it once
was, that’s agreed on.
But let’s remember that without Bowden, Florida
State football is nowhere near the name it is today. He single handedly built that program into
what it was. Added to that, the season
is not over. With seven games left,
there is still an outside (very outside) chance the ‘Noles can still make the
ACC Championship game. Imagine if this
team defied the odds and won out…because you know Jim Smith would be the first
person there to shake Bowden’s hand and say “I knew you could do it” like the
politician he is.
- Can you really say a season is over after
five games? I’m not just talking about Florida State here, but a lot of teams. Oklahoma’s
season is “over” with two losses, but never mind those two losses were by a
combined…two points. Florida State
is two plays away from being 4-1, and conversely, Miami is two plays away from being 1-3. The first five games don’t mean anything,
which is why I’m starting to get behind the idea of the rankings not starting
until mid-October. That’s when we know
the truth about teams.
- I think if FAMU pulls off the upset this week
over Miami, they should get to play in Florida State’s home stadium, 83,000
seat Doak Campbell Stadium, while the ‘Noles have to move over to FAMU’s Bragg
Stadium, which maybe seats 20,000. Sounds
fair.
- On that note, there is a certain sports
columnist for a certain newspaper in central Florida who has been the biggest agitator during
this whole sorted affair. He’s doing the
same thing that he did during the Ron Zook firing at Florida back in 2004, just stirring the pot.
It’s kind of getting annoying to read
his negative articles online all the time. I know think its sexy to play the role of the
jerk sports columnist who thinks he’s better then everyone, but the Worldwide
Leader in Sports isn’t hiring at the moment, so you’re just wasting your time.
- Speaking of the WWL in sports, am I the only
one who misses the days of Saturday Night football being Ron Franklin and Mike
Gottfried? Brad Nessler is great, and
should be back to being the main guy on the Alphabet channel with Bob Griese.
- And Matt Millen should be no where near a
microphone when it comes to talking football. So far this season, I have heard him talk
about how great three different wide receivers are in three different games,
which was followed by the players, in order, having the ball going through
their hands the first game, fumbling the second game, and hurting themselves
running…out of bounds…with no one within 20 yards of them in the third game! No wonder the Lions turned out how they did.
- Everyone say it with me…Notre Dame is back. I still think they will lose to USC on the 17th
of October, but that will be it for them. It’s back to the BCS, and some sense of
validation for Charlie Weis.
- This week on CBS4, big weekend of college
football. First up, Boston College
takes on Virginia Tech in a possible ACC Championship game preview at noon. Then, Alabama
vs. Ole Miss at 3:30 pm. And at 8 pm,
its #1 Florida
vs. #4 LSU. Don’t change the channel for
even a second!
Oct 3, 2009 12:29 AM Posted by JasonParker Ok…before we get started this week, as an alum of Florida State, I have to make good on a bet I lost to a high school friend of mine:
USF BEAT FSU!!! FSU LOST TO USF!!! THE BULLS BEAT THE ‘NOLES!!! (That hurt.)
Ok, back to the picks. I can’t seem to break out of the 6-4 hold. Maybe picking better might help.
Last Week’s Record: 6-4
Season Total: 25-14
Elon vs. Furman: Ok, you may be asking one thing: “What the heck…What’s a nice Jewish boy like Jason doing picking a game between two private, Christian schools?” Two reasons…a) We only did nine games the first week and need to make up a game…and b) Why not? Give me the Paladines any day of the week. Preseason Pick: Yeah, right. This Week’s Pick: Furman
Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State: The Yellow Jackets haven’t looked as unstoppable as everyone, including myself, thought they would. Add that to the fact that Dan Mullen doesn’t have MSU playing all that bad…by Bulldog standards. Could be closer than predicted. Preseason Pick: Georgia Tech This Week’s Pick: Georgia Tech
Auburn vs. Tennessee: Speaking of teams doing better than thought, the Tigers row into Knoxville undefeated and healthy. Tennessee can’t keep living off the moral victory of losing to Florida by only ten points for much longer. Preseason Pick: Tennessee This Week’s Pick: Auburn.
Washington vs. Notre Dame: Could it be…Jimmy Clausen a Heisman candidate? Hard to fathom this is the same school that looked bad going 3-9 just two years ago. But maybe Charlie Weis has turned the ship around. Meanwhile, was Washington’s upset of USC a fluke or are they ready to party? So many questions… Preseason Pick: Notre Dame This Week’s Pick: Notre Dame
Michigan vs. Michigan State: The game that will bring families into battle…mothers against fathers, brothers against sisters, Fords against Chevys…too soon? Michigan State looked so good at the start of the year, but the Wolverines have seemed to show up and make up for last season. Preseason Pick: Michigan State This Week’s Pick: Michigan
LSU vs. Georgia: The Bayou Bengals come to Athens in an inter-divisional matchup from the SEC. On paper, LSU is the better team, and should have a dominating win. But Georgia has the Tigers in a spot where they could catch LSU napping. Remember, LSU does have Florida next week. Preseason Pick: Georgia This Week’s Pick: LSU
USC vs. California: So let me get this right…USC loses to Washington, plummets in the Top 25, beats a bad Washington State team and gets back to #7? So, if Cal beats the Trojans, do they jump from #24 back into the Top 10? The man crush on Pete Carroll and USC has got to stop. Just for that, I’m not going to pick them in this game…yeah, right. Preseason Pick: USC This Week’s Pick: USC
South Florida vs. Syracuse: The folks from Fowler Avenue Community College have had a field day this week after their monumental upset of FSU. The hangover has lasted all through the past seven days, and for that, and maybe a little out of personal spite, I think they do the same thing FSU did to them; look past the opponent on the field. Preseason Pick: USF This Week’s Pick: Syracuse
FIU vs. Louisiana-Monroe: This is it, Golden Panther fans. This is the time where your team will begin to shine. You may not have the depth yet to hang with Alabama, Rutgers, or Florida…but you have more than enough to win the Sun Belt. The road to New Orleans begins here. Preseason Pick: FIU This Week’s Pick: FIU
Florida State vs. Boston College: Also, as part of a lost bet, I can no longer refer to the ‘Noles by their initials for the remainder of the season. Last week was embarrassing for the garnet and gold. The talent is there in Tallahassee…why it isn’t consistent on the field is something Bobby, Jimbo, Mickey, Christian, and the rest of the team needs to figure out if they still want a shot at winning the ACC. Preseason Pick: Florida State This Week’s Pick: Florida State
Miami vs. Oklahoma: This one is going to be a battle for the ages. Steve Walsh and Michael Irvin vs. Brian Bosworth and Keith Jackson. Switzer vs. Johnson…oh wait, this is 2009.
The Hurricanes got brought down a peg in last week’s washout in Blacksburg, and you could feel the collective group jumping off the bandwagon. It doesn’t make sense, seeing as this Sooners team is beatable. With all due respect to Landry Jones, not having Sam Bradford as the starter does hurt, no matter what Bob Stoops says. A team who has wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech gives me more to support than Tulsa and Idaho State. With all that being said, this is the best of the first four defenses that Jacory and friends are going to see. Keeping it close is how the ‘Canes have a shot at winning this one. Preseason Pick: Oklahoma This Week’s Pick: Miami
Sep 26, 2009 12:23 AM Posted by JasonParker Alright…I was able to keep my head above water last week…let us try and do better this week, ok?
Last Week: 6-4
Season Total: 19-10
Texas Christian vs. Clemson: At the start of the year, this looked like a game that could have national championship implications. Now it just looks like a possibly black eye for the ACC. Preseason Pick: Clemson This Week’s Pick: TCU
Arizona State vs. Georgia: The Sun Devils make the return trip between the hedges. Last year, UGA went to Tempe and laid the wood on Dennis Erickson’s team. A little closer this year, but same winner. Preseason Pick: Georgia This Week’s Pick: Georgia
North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech: Two teams still looking to represent the ACC’s Coastal Division in Tampa for the conference championship game in December. North Carolina comes in higher ranked, but I smell an upset in Atlanta. Preseason Pick: Georgia Tech This Week’s Pick: Georgia Tech
California vs. Oregon: With USC’s loss last week, the Bears have now taken the front runner spot for the conference’s title…at least for this week. Call me when the Trojans come to town. Preseason Pick: California This Week’s Pick: California
Arkansas vs. Alabama: Who knew that Ryan Mallett was that good of a quarterback? He’ll keep the Razorbacks in this one for the first half, but Nick Satan…I mean Saban and company are just too strong right now in the SEC. Preseason Pick: Alabama This Week’s Pick: Alabama
Iowa vs. Penn State: I don’t think you have one game that can strike fear in the Nittany Lions more than this week vs. the Hawkeyes. Iowa has caused more pain for Joe Paterno then Social Security. Not this year. Preseason Pick: Penn State This Week’s Pick: Penn State
FIU vs. Toledo: The home opener for the Golden Panthers welcomes the team they upset in 2008 that gave home for the team’s future. The Rockets will be hungry for revenge and should leave with it. Preseason Pick: Toledo This Week’s Pick: Toledo
Florida vs. Kentucky: The year was 1986…I was 3 years old…It was also the last time the Wildcats won over the Gators. This year is 2009…I am 26 years old…and the Gators will make it 23 games in a row over UK. Preseason Pick: Florida This Week’s Pick: Florida
Florida State vs. South Florida: The winner gets to use the initials of S, F, and U for the next season. But seriously, the ‘Noels will be trying to prove last week’s blowout of BYU wasn’t a joke, while the Bulls want to make the state’s “Big Three” the “Big Four”. Maybe they’ll get their chance another time. Preseason Pick: Florida State This Week’s Pick: Florida State.
Miami vs. Virginia Tech: The Hurricanes welcomed themselves back to the top 10 this week, and don’t intend to leave anytime soon. This could be the real test for Miami because, with all due respect to FSU and Georgia Tech, this will be the best defense the ‘Canes will face…until the following week against Oklahoma. Are the ‘Canes for real? Have they finally returned to the glory that we have heard about for the last three seasons? It’s hard to argue with the facts at this point. Last time they went to Blacksburg, it wasn’t pretty. This time will be much better. Preseason Pick: Miami This Week’s Pick: Miami
Sep 17, 2009 4:09 PM Posted by JasonParker Ok, so we did a little better last week. I'd like to think we are hitting our stride, but we all know that won't last... Last Week: 8-2 Season: 13-6 Georgia vs. Arkansas: Georgia should win this one easily, but with sloppy play the first two weeks and a Bobby Petrino-coached Razorback offense, the Bulldogs need to stay on their toes or this season could go downhill in a hurry. Preseason Pick: Georgia This Week's Pick: GeorgiaNebraska vs. Virginia Tech: The Hokies are nearly as unbeatable at home against non-conference teams as anyone in college football history. With a game vs. the 'Canes a week away, could they over look the Big Red machine coming to town? Preseason Pick: Virginia Tech This Week's Pick: Virginia TechTexas vs. Texas Tech: Remember the 2008 game...remember the pass from Graham Harrell to Michael Crabtree with one second to go...remember when both those guys went to the NFL draft...that was about the same time hopes for two in a row over the Longhorns went out the window. Preseason Pick: Texas This Week's Pick: TexasUtah vs. Oregon: At the beginnning of the year, this seemed like it would be a top 10 level game. Now, it looks like another tuneup for the Utes as they try to get back to the BCS. Preseason Pick: Oregon This Week's Pick: UtahDuke vs. Kansas: This is on the list cause I have to man up about something. At the start of the year, I picked Duke to win this game. Must have been drunk on the plane trip back when I made these picks. Now is my chance to do right. Preseason Pick: Duke (Seriously.) This Week's Pick: KansasFIU-Rutgers: Mario Cristobal heading back to his old stomping grounds as an assistant coach. Looked good for a half against Alabama...can he make it a full game against a Scarlet Knights team that has looked bad the first two weeks (a win over Howard doesnt count as credible). Preseason Pick: Rutgers This Week's Pick: FIUFAU vs. South Carolina: South Carolina is coming off a close loss to Georgia, while the Owls got a week off after getting dogstomped by Nebraska. Won't matter. Preseason Pick: South Carolina This Week's Pick: South Carolina Florida State vs. BYU: I have to say, even as an FSU alum, that last week against Jacksonville State was embarassing. After watching the first two weeks of the Seminoles, worry must set in about Max Hall lighting the defense up in Provo. My heart says one thing, but I have to use my head. I've never wanted to be wrong more in my life. Preseason Pick: BYU This Week's Pick: BYU Florida vs. Tennessee: The over-under should be around 100...that's what Florida will score by itself if Urban Meyer had his chance. But seriously, this game will only go one of two ways: A blowout for the Gators or a close win for the Vols. There is no middle ground in this one. Preseason Pick: Florida This Week's Pick: FloridaMiami vs. Georgia Tech: The revenge game in Miami Gardens. The Hurricanes are feeling nothing but confidence after their comeback win over FSU. Having ten days and a while offseason to prepare for the Jackets offense should make this much closer then 2008. Can they fully stop Jonathan Dwyer and the rest of the triple option. If so, this could be the beginning of something special. That being said, I still think the weapons and the system for Georgia Tech will be too much for Miami. Preseason Pick: Georgia Tech This Week's Pick: Georgia Tech. | |
